The International Organisation for Migration, United Nations, UK

“The International Organization for Migration (IOM) is honoured to support the launch of Odyssey Ensemble and its effort to advocating for the dignity of refugees and migrants in the UK through music.

People move for a variety of reasons, and throughout human history migration has been a courageous expression of the individual’s will to overcome adversity and to live a better life. IOM is committed to the principle that humane and orderly migration benefits migrants and society. As the United Nations’ Migration Agency, upholding the human rights and dignity of migrants, including refugees, is at the heart of our mandate.

In the UK, we are committed to support a more balanced narrative around migration that recognises the positive contribution of migrants and refugees as well as the generosity and compassion of communities across the UK, who work together to promote inclusion and mutual understanding.

Projects such as Odyssey Ensemble are a testament to the power of music to provide a safe space for people from different backgrounds, to share their experiences and perspectives, and to showcase their talents and skills, beyond their status. Through music, people can be empowered to tell their stories, express their emotions, and convey their cultural heritage. This can also help to humanize refugees and migrants and create empathy among host communities.

By bringing people together, promoting harmony and respect, Odyssey Ensemble will certainly be a powerful force for positive change - in its own community and beyond.”
